Photoelectric Effect

Introduction:

      Background: Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921 "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". Historically, photoelectric effect served as one of the foundational experiments in quantum mechanics in understanding the quantum nature of light and electrons.

      When electromagnetic radiation (light) falls on a metal surface, electrons from the metal are ejected out. This observation is the basis of Photoelectric effect and has several practical applications:

  1. Night Vision Technology
  2. Solar Energy Cells
  3. Photoelectron Spectroscopy
